To: Governor Jerry Brown, Jr.
We, the undersigned health care professionals, respectfully urge you to pass Medi-Cal expansion immediately and without any amendments that will slow the process and potentially make it harder for people to enroll.
On behalf of Doctors for America, we offer our support for the Senate and Assembly Medi-Cal Expansion and Simplification bills (SBX1 1 and ABX1 1). Doctors for America is a national movement of over 16,000 doctors and medical students who are working together to improve the health of the nation and to ensure that everyone has access to affordable, high-quality health care. We have more than 2,300 members who take care of people across California.
California is a state that leads the nation. We applaud your work on securing a waiver to expand Medi-Cal coverage early and your leadership on making California the first state in the nation to establish an insurance marketplace. Unfortunately, we also lead the nation in lack of access to health care with the largest number of uninsured (over 7.2 million). While the numbers of uninsured Californians rose over the past two decades, the percentage of those with employer-based coverage fell to 52% in 2011. The Medi-Cal expansion helps fill in the gaps in coverage of the poorest residents.
California’s health care professionals care for the uninsured and indigent every day. Lack of health care access and coverage leaves far too many Californians with far too few options. As physicians, we see the Medi-Cal expansion bill as critical to ensuring affordable, equitable, and quality health care coverage. As Californians, we see this as in our state’s best interest to cover millions of the currently uninsured and save the state billions of dollars. We urge you to pass this bill without amendments and without delay. We look forward to working with you to help ensure the health of the patients, families, and communities most in need in California.
